Detail shot of the high-gloss center stripe on a custom black plinth-base table

PROJECT LOG: ENGINEERING THE OBSIDIAN STATEMENT

THE CHALLENGE: BEYOND THE SURFACE When we took on the commission for this Obsidian piece, the goal was to move past the idea of a "table" and create a structural anchor. For a high-end space, you need more than just a place to sit; you need a centerpiece that interacts with the room's architecture. The transition from raw white oak to a dual-tone black masterpiece was about finding the perfect balance between light-absorption and reflection.

THE PROCESS: THE TWO-TONE "SIZZLE" The most technical aspect of this build isn't the size—it’s the finish. To achieve the two-tone contrast, we utilize a meticulous multi-stage leveling process. -- The Flanks: We apply a velvet matte black that eliminates glare and highlights the sharp, clean edges of the Plinth-Base. -- The Center Channel: This is the "race stripe," a high-gloss finish that creates a mirror effect. The transition between these two finishes has to be seamless to the touch. It requires hours of precision hand-masking and a dust-free environment to ensure the "Sizzle" isn't lost in the details.

ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRITY As a third-generation craftsman in Attica, KS, I build for high-capacity use. This isn't a piece that will deflect or wobble over time. -- Plinth-Base Construction: We opted for slab-style supports to give the table a monolithic, permanent feel. -- All-Age Rated: This build is engineered for the "High-End Guest Retreat" lifestyle—durable enough for a busy household, yet refined enough for a Wichita art gallery.

THE RESULT: A GENERATIONAL CENTERPIECE The finished "Obsidian Statement" is a testament to what happens when you combine technical woodworking with modern design. It represents the pinnacle of our current build cycle. Because we only accept 6 major commissions per year, we are able to pour this level of focus into every square inch of the grain.
